October Half Term is upon us! The time of year when you don’t need to worry about cleaning the cobwebs and spiders from your home!
Below are some of the best things to do with your kids over the scary school holidays in North Wales!
On Monday 20 August 2018, the 70th Anniversary of the last train on the original Corris Railway, the Talyllyn Railway launched an appeal to restore the only operable coach from that line. Originally built for the Corris as their carriage No.8 in 1898 by the Metropolitan Carriage and Wagon Co., it was rescued in a derelict condition from a back garden in the 1950s and restored to its former glory.
Today, I’m visiting Trefriw Woolen Mills just between Conwy And Llanrwst. The Mills have been producing woollen products on site, starting with raw wool since 1859, and it’s still owned and run by the same family. I was lucky enough to have Elaine Williams showing me around. Elaine has worked in the family business since the 70’s, so her knowledge is vast!
Well, today I’m off to the heady heights of the Snowdon Summit – a whopping 3,560 feet up! This is no Mount by the way – it’s definitely a MOUNTAIN! The highest peak in England and Wales. What an Attraction!
Clwb Syrffio Dyffryn Conwy has helped local youngsters find skilled employment and develop ‘transformational’ life skills
We are pleased to announce that the Burmese Dancers have returned to Portmeirion.
The Burmese Dancers are a pair of statues carved from lacquered wood and gilded in gold leaf. They are associated with the 19th century court arts of Mandalay, Burma, marked by flamboyant costume details. But how did two Burmese dancing statues find their way to an Italianate village on the coast of Snowdonia?
Quote from Naomi Saunders – Marketing Manager:
“We had the staff trip on Thursday last week and it was a great success! It took us the estimated 14 hours…..I’m not going to lie, it was an exhausting day for us, but is by far the best thing I’ve ever done!!”
The Dyfi Distillery in Corris has been named as a finalist in not one, but two business awards in the last few days.
Last week, brothers Pete and Danny Cameron who set up the distillery in 2016, were told that they were a finalist in the Rural Business Awards, which recognizes companies across the UK who champion working in a rural location.
Rail travel is one of my favourite modes of transport, so add the nostalgia of steam engines and the glorious scenery of Snowdonia and you have the recipe for a perfect few days.
We are hiring!
This February, we will be heading back to North Wales and enjoying as much as we can fit in to our week off. Here are my top five things to do in Snowdonia with kids (in no particular order of course!)
High-quality Christmas shopping, scrumptious food and drink and a blockbuster drive-in cinema experience. Nikki Jones tells us about a few of the treats on offer at the Surf Snowdonia Christmas Market this year.
Michael Bewick of Llechwedd Slate Caverns tells us about a new lease of life for a hardworking piece of underground machinery.
Sian Povey tells us about the end of a busy summer and the start of an equally packed autumn and winter at Plas Glan y Weddw.
John Lloyd of Inigo Jones Slate Works tells us about working to secure UNESCO World Heritage Site status for the North Wales slate industry.
Matthew Williams of Nant Gwrtheyrn National Welsh Language and Heritage Centre tells us about some magical events for children taking place this summer.
Surf Snowdonia’s Andy Ainscough tells us about two upcoming events at the revolutionary inland surf lagoon.
Elizabeth Partridge tells us about how a lifelong love of trains led her to become Snowdon Mountain Railway’s first female fireman.
Natalia Mascaro of Corris Craft Centre’s Y Crochan café and the Bwtri Y Crochan Welsh food and drink shop on her love for local produce and Snowdonia food favourites.
Subterranean adventures across Snowdonia.
Andrea Bristow tells us what’s new for the Year of Legends at GreenWood Forest Park.
Dyfi Distillery isn’t just the first commercial distillery in Mid Wales. Its Hibernation Gin is also number one on The Independent’s list of the 10 Best New Gins. Co-founder Danny Cameron explains what makes it so special.
Amy Owen fills us in on the Underground Sleepover at Corris Mine Explorers, a subterranean experience that made a big impression.
We took part in the Underground Sleepover for my boyfriend’s birthday and it’s a gift I’m pretty sure he’s never going to forget. We’re really into walking and anything else that gives you a rush (we’ve recently been skydiving). I really didn’t anticipate any adrenaline from this activity, mainly because I had no previous experience underground and didn’t really know what to expect. We were so wrong!
Megi Williams of South Caernarfon Creameries tells us about an unusual cheesy collaboration with Llechwedd Slate Caverns.
We wanted to bring out something new, so we looked back to some of the traditional methods used to do things and decided to try maturing our cheese in Caverns. We checked around for a suitable location and decided on Llechwedd Slate Caverns. There are hundreds of caverns, so it was the perfect place.
Jana Jones of Attractions of Snowdonia explains why the new Snowdonia Pass is a must-have for visitors and locals alike.
Flights of architectural fancy, film crews and festivals. Portmeirion’s Meurig Jones takes us inside Snowdonia’s most unusual village.
