Let Snowdon Mountain Railway take you on the journey of a lifetime to the rooftop of Wales.

Snowdon, at 1085m dominates the landscape of the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales. From the first views of the waterfall plunging into the gorge below at the start of the journey, to the breath-taking sights over the sheer edge of Rocky Valley, every moment is memorable.

One of the world’s greatest panoramas is revealed at the summit. Hafod Eryri, the UK’s highest visitor centre, has spectacular panoramic views to the valleys below. Venture to the cairn, where on a clear day you can see Ireland, England, Scotland and the Isle of Man. From the summit of the highest Mountain in Wales and England, young and old can embrace the invigorating atmosphere of Eryri – Land of the Eagles.

Established in 1896 as Snowdon Mountain Tramroad and Hotels Company Limited, the Snowdon Mountain Railway has operated almost uninterrupted since its inception as a commercial tourist railway. It is the only ABT rack and pinion railway of its kind in the UK with all of the original Swiss steam locomotives still in their treasured possession.

Two services are available:

Heritage Steam Experience Journey to the summit of Snowdon on one of the award-winning carriages, pushed by an original 1896 Swiss steam locomotive. Both The Snowdon Lily and The Snowdon Mountain Goat visit Hafod Eryri daily May to October, and the Heritage Steam Experience is exactly as it was back in 1896. Seating only 34 passengers, people who prefer a more spacious carriage are advised to book the Heritage Steam Experience.

The Traditional Diesel Service Partnering tradition with technical know-how, the diesel carriages (introduced 2012) have ensured the longevity of Snowdon Mountain Railway. Pushed by one of the Hunslet Engine Company diesel locomotives, these carriages seat up to 60 passengers, 8 per compartment.

All summit services last approx. 2.5 hours, including a 30 minute stop at the summit. Subject to weather conditions and passenger demand, trains run every day from mid-March until the end of October. The first train departs at 9am, and then at regular intervals thereafter. In the early part of the season (March and April) trains are expected to run to Clogwyn, ¾ distance up the mountain.

Arrive a little before your departure and enjoy original ‘Ivor the Engine’ cartoons in the film theatre, browse the authentic Welsh products in the gift shop, and choose from a range of refreshments from the fully licenced Station Buffet and Platform Grill eateries.

A visit to Snowdon Mountain Railway is a great day out and a unique Majestic Mountain Top Adventure for all the family!
